Sea Floor

The old sea floor stretches to the horizon.
It's a lot drier today of course than when it was about 30m underwater.

Time and Space Flies By

The country side still flies past the window at a large rate of knots. This is looking out over what was once a great inland sea. Now it is dry and flat. But underneath, the rock is filled with water forming the great artesian basin.

Pliosaur

A detail of the Richmond Pliosaur tail. This fossilised skeleton can be found in Kronosaurus Korner, the Richmond museum of marine reptiles and fossils.

Mary Kathleen

This is the open cut at Mary Kathleen on sunset. It's an old disused uranium mine halfway to Cloncurry.

The Water Oasis

Lake Julius

This is the view over Lake Julius from the lookout. It's a damn impressive dam.
This is about a three hour drive from Mt Isa on a fairly rough dirt road. It is a well maintained road but requires low speeds, and the last section is impassable to on-road vehicles. If you don't have a 4wd you'll need to walk the last 3 or 4km because the dry river bed crossing is smooth loose stones. Only a dry season road.

A different angle

These bikes are nice and shiny, clean and new. Just wait for the outback dust. I wish them luck, it will be a hard week of work before they return to town.

Endeavour Cannonball Charity Ride

On Saturday a Cannonball Charity Ride for the Endeavour Foundation started out from the local Bunnings store in town. The bikes and riders started out fresh, leaving town at 8:30am headed north.

Skyreaching

The best thing about a mining expo is all the great pieces of machinery they have sitting around. For a person into physics and maths you just can't go past all the cool examples that you'll find.

Chopper

There was a helicopter landed in the middle of the main street. The mining expo is still on and today is the last day.

Mucking Machine

There's a mining expo on in the main street and the civic centre here in Mt Isa. This piece of machinery is called a mucker. It collects the rock blasted from the stopes and shifts it to a surface conveyor. It's big, solid and yellow, at least while it's still new.
