Mary Kathleen Open Cut

This is the old open cut pit at Mary Kathleen where Uranium was the ore of choice. Now it is a photogenic waterhole in the middle of no where.

Fountain Springs

I took an Australia Day trip to Fountain Springs, a permanent waterhole south west of Mount Isa. This was a beautiful spot to go for a swim on a warm humid day.

Stacked Sunset

The sunsets in central regions of Australia are always spectacular. This is from the town lookout.

Senseless Combustion

I took a drive out to the Cascades for a look. Unfortunately some drunken neanderthals have just discovered fire and burnt out the viewing platform.

Insect Art

While driving a car one cannot avoid all the little insects flying past, nor can they avoid the car. This is the artistic result of fourteen hours of insect sacrifice on a car bonnet.

Winton Sunset

Of course, one cannot have a sunrise without a sunset. This was the sunset at the Winton mesas with the crescent Moon and Jupiter above.

On the way from the Sunshine Coast to Mount Isa I stopped for a sleep just north of Winton. This was the view that greeted me in the morning.

Lake Moondarra 2010. It's not as full as after the big wet last year, but still topped up nicely.

Ngungun Walk

This is a picturesque section of the track up Mount Ngungun in the Glasshouse Mountains. It's a nice easy walk up this mountain and some great views from the top.

Beerwah and Coonowrin

These two of the Glasshouse Mountains are now permanently closed to climbing. Beerwah in the background and Coonowrin in front. I was going to climb Mount Beerwah but some wiser voice of reason than I talked me out of it. I shall have to rely on past memories of climbing Beerwah when it was open to the public.

Festival Fun

These purple wristbands were given to everyone who bought tickets online through the sunset sounds website. Something refreshingly different from the usual wristband tags.

Rocking Horse Music

This is my favourite music store, called Rocking Horse, just off the Queen Street Mall on Albert Street near King George Square. I bought my first ever CD from here. An album called Kitten Licks by the Brisbane band Screamfeeder, I still have the CD all these years later.

Fractal Elk

A taxidermied elk covered in acrylic spheres. The images formed in the spheres are fascinating and it is a must see. Unfortunately this photo does not do the installation justice as the colour balance is not correct. You must see it for yourself.

Little Men

An installation at the Asia Pacific Triennial. There are about 500 of these little men all holding up flowers.

6th APT at GOMA

The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial art exhibition is on at the Gallery Of Modern Art on Brisbane's South Bank. A good friend recommended that I should visit, and I shall pass on the recommendation to you. It is wonderful to see the everyday from a non Euro-centric viewpoint.

Seasick Steve

At the Sunset Sounds music festival in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Seasick Steve made an appearance. He completely enthralled the small crowd.

Masterpieces

I got to see some amazing paintings in Canberra at the National Gallery of Australia.

Hell's Gates

This Hell's Gates lookout at Noosa Heads National Park. It's a wonderful walk out and back along a very scenic track. The track is going to be closed very shortly for repairs, so if you want a look, get in now or you'll have to wait a few months.

Lichen

Lichen on an old wooden deck that is 'flowering', if that's what lichen does.

Busy Bee

A bee gets busy in a water lilly flower. It's hind legs are stacked with pollen.

Surfer

A surfer takes advantage of a few early morning waves without competing with the crowds at Point Cartwright.

Ferris Wheel

I went for my first ever ferris wheel ride. This was on New Year's Eve at Mooloolaba.

New Year's Day

The sun is shining on a new year in 2010. I always hoped we'd be somewhere close to Arthur C Clarke's 2010 technology by now, but it hasn't happened. Guess I'll just have to build my own spaceship then.

Happy New Year!

I saw in the New Year with many other people at the Mooloolaba New Year Festival watching Kate Miller-Heidke. An awesome performer to top off the night before the fireworks.
