I flew all the way to Brisbane to see some rocks from Mount Isa and Mary Kathleen. We have special rocks round here.

An Outback Story

This stalwart exhibit of the Queensland Museum has been on display since I remember first visiting the museum at Southbank many years ago.  I always marvelled at the huge dinosaur and the giant footprints stuck in the mud on the wall.  Then one day, I grew up a bit more and made the drive to Winton in the early 2000's and saw the real footprints in the rock for myself.  It was amazing.  And now when I return to the museum I still remember the mystique the footprints inspired.  Museums are way cool, every child should visit them.

Flow

The flowing water and traffic of the Brisbane CBD.  The river is criss-crossed by bridges of all sorts, from tensegrity to arch.

Big Balls

Brisbane's big balls.  Artworks made of colanders located in the Queen Street mall.

Waves And Volcanic Plugs

Water splashes ashore overlooking the aptly named Pumicestone Passage.  Behind can be seen the extinct volcanoes that caused the pumice.

Orion Nebula

The Orion nebula, M42, as seen from Mount Isa in a 60mm refractor.

Doggy Lifesaver

A lifesaving dog at King's Beach surf life saving club at Caloundra collects donations.

Canoe Rapids

The first small obstacle to negotiate at the beginning of the Gregory Canoe Race.  The annual Gregory Canoe Race begins here and heads downstream to end at the Gregory Downs Hotel about 20 kilometres north.

Under The Melaleuca

Sitting in the shade of a Melaleuca tree on the banks of the Gregory River.  A great place for a camp out.

Riversleigh D Site

A fossil bone and gizzard contents from a big bird that lived in Australia long ago.  This is in the world heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil Site D just south of Lawn Hill.

Archer Fish

Fascinating little fish that shoot their pray down with jets of water from their mouths.

Tufa

An interesting formation of limestone called tufa.  The limestone rich waters carry sediments that build up slowly over time to make these intricate formations.  The rock that builds up like this is called tufa.

Palm Reflection

Even in a National Park the law of reflection still holds true.

Indarri Falls

A small waterfall section on Lawn Hill Creek known as Indarri Falls.  This is well worth the walk and or paddle up the gorge for a cool swim.

Palms

A wonderful stand of palms along the return walk at the edge of the Lawn Hill Creek.

Upper Gorge

The main gorge at Lawn Hill.  If you look closely you will spot the little freshwater crocodile seen in yesterday's post.

Crikey!

A croc!  A freshwater crocodile, quietly sunning itself in the early morning rays at the Upper Gorge at Lawn Hill.

Wild Walk

The best kind of cliff edges in my opinion.  This is on the long walk to the upper gorge at Lawn Hill.

Sunrise Reflection

The early morning sun hits a warm rock wall in the National Park at Lawn Hill Gorge.  Unfortunately the sky is overexposed, but the reflection turned out just beautifully.

Adel's Rapid

One of the small rapids near the Adel's Grove campsite.  Going to sleep by the soothing sounds of the running water is a very relaxing way to spend your holiday.

Clear Runway For Landing

Lawn Hill Escarpment

Some of the spectacular scenery in the Lawn Hill National Park from the air.  I was very lucky and scored a flight with the wonderfully hospitable Rod, owner of Adel's Grove.

Glamping

If you would prefer some glamorous camping, or glamping as it is known, then you can book one of these permanent tents.  Even though it may be near the middle of no where, you don't have to rough it once you get to Adel's Grove.
