Fractal Tree

A fractal tree branching toward the sky.

Old Tree

A beautiful old tree overlooks the tailings dam behind the Mount Isa mines.

Rainbow

A very faint rainbow just south west of Mount Isa. A rare sight around here in the current drought.

Mica View

A view through a piece of transparent rock, otherwise known as mica. It must have been strange finding things like this on the ground before glass was discovered.

Behind The Mine

Behind the Mount Isa mine site on Mica Creek you can see this view. This particular afternoon included clouds which added something different to the panorama.

Trees With Cloud

In the outback one always finds surprising pieces of artwork waiting to be observed.

Finding ISON

With a little help from my star app SkySafari and a digital zoom, I was able to locate comet ISON in this image at the bottom left corner of the zoom box. It really is there, just very tiny and faint. This was taken at approximately 4:30am Wednesday, November 20, 2013.

Chasing ISON

Comet ISON is presently in the early morning sky before dawn near the bright star Spica, below and east of reddish Mars.  I tried getting a shot Sunday morning, but cloud obscured the view.

Remarkable View

Looming Fire

A cloud of smoke and ash looms on the distant horizon near West Leichhardt. Small pieces of ash were falling from the sky even though the fire was many kilometres distant.

November Sky

An overcast sky in November indicates the wet season has almost arrived in Mount Isa. Unfortunately the rain it contains is still very minimal.

The Milky Way sets over the iconic Big Red sand dune near Birdsville.

After playing around with a  great little program called StarStax, I produced this image. I like the effect it created.

Sunset Pastels

As the sun set further atop Big Red, the colours came from the clouds in the sky, and reflected in the lake below.
