Rise Sun

Photographers and early risers watch the Sun as it traverses the horizon, from the top of Big Red (the sand dune).

Sunup

The sleepy campground below Big Red is veiled in a haze of smoke and dust at sunup on a cool Monday morning last week in Birdsville.

Onlookers

The onlookers were even in helicopters to see all the action from a higher angle.

Sand Hill Climb

Part of the entertainment at the Big Red Bash involved watching many members of the public almost literally throw their expensive 4x4 rigs at the steep track up the Big Red sand dune. Some of the cars got a bit more of a bash than others. I remember hearing this land cruiser hit the bump stops on landing.

Big Red Laser Show

The night time laser show on the Big Red sand dune was a remarkable sight from anywhere in the sprawling camp ground.

Jimmy Barnes

The Big Red Bash music festival finished with a show by classic Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes. Wilbur Wilde, the host for the day, made a cameo appearance on saxophone.

Shade Of A Milky Way Tree

The Milky Way sets over the iconic Big Red sand dune near Birdsville.

After playing around with a  great little program called StarStax, I produced this image. I like the effect it created.

As the sun set further atop Big Red, the colours came from the clouds in the sky, and reflected in the lake below.

Lake In The Sand

A shallow lake behind the Big Red Sand Dune near Birdsville. It was the last thing I expected to see in this desert.

Wind Blown

Thirty kilometres west of Birdsville lies Big Red. The sand dune that signifies the beginning of the Simpson Desert crossing. One day soon I shall return to this place and cross said desert.

Keep Left

Among the sand dunes entering the Simpson desert near Bedourie on the way to Birdsville, you will find signs like this. They are very sensible reminders of how to keep safe.

By Starlight

Camped beside the road south of Boulia, lit only by starlight, the car is illuminated under the Milky Way galaxy en route to Birdsville.
