Henbury Meteorite

One of the pieces of meteorite from the Henbury impact field. THis one is held at the Melbourne Museum. It was good to see a piece of the impactor after seeing the crater field many times in the past.

Spotted Rock

A spotted quartzite rock amongst the fragments of rock at the impact crater site of Box Hole.

Camp Three

The third night was a camp out at the Henbury Meteorite Crater Reserve. It has become one of my favourite spots to camp and walk the crater rim.

Bounce

The Monster Trucks provided all sorts of examples of physics. Here, with all the weight on the front wheels, the tyres have to absorb some of the impact too.

Spinifex Doughnut

A walk inside the giant Tnorala Crater reveals some of these curious spinifex doughnuts. I remember reading a scientific article on why these patterns of spinifex appear, I can't remember where or why.

Crater Dawn

The Tnorala (Gosse Bluff) impact crater at dawn. An ancient scar on an ancient land, under an ancient sun.

Jupiter Impact

Recently a backyard astronomer in Australia spotted what appears to be an impact scar on Jupiter. So, I decided to see if we could see it here too in Mount Isa. I went out with the Mount Isa Astronomy Group to our local observatory and took my little telescope and camera to have a look. The result; we saw it!
The impact scar is the dark spot top dead centre of the disc. The two moons are Europa and Io, left to right.
