Ancient Rock Pillars

These ancient pillars of cap rock on the edge of the Jump-Up at the AAOD Museum of Natural History are very old. And despite their appearance, are completely unsuitable for climbing due to their crumbly, fragmenting nature.

Paper Beats Rock

In a real life struggle for dominance in the game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, it is clear that paper really does beat rock as this example shows. This is at Little Rocky Creek near Landsborough.

Owl Pillar

The Owl Pillar (formerly Malcolm's Pillar) at the lower cliffs on Ngungun. This will be my next climbing project.

Starlight's Window

Just north of Longreach is a small hill called Starlight's Lookout. This rock formation had eroded to produce a window view on the plain below.

Beerwah Summit

A new map at the base of Mount Beerwah in the Glasshouse Mountains National Park shows a nice diagram of the route to the summit.

Spotted Rock

A spotted quartzite rock amongst the fragments of rock at the impact crater site of Box Hole.

Gregory Tufa

The first obstacle on the Gregory Canoe Race is this narrow entry between some rough rock covered in tufa. It hurts when you get it wrong here.

Footprints In The Rock

A section of the footprints left behind in what was once soft mud, now is hard rock. The conjunction of the perfect conditions for this preservation to occur and become visible to us is phenomenal.

I imagine these rock walls would have many tales to tell of the millennia past, the seasons' change and the odd intrepid visitor who may dare to pass.

Rocky

An unusual rock on the ground. I was hoping it may have been a meteorite because it had a smooth fusion like crust, was unusually dense and was significantly magnetic. It turned out to be a rather ordinary haematite.

Pinnacle

A pinnacle of rock with a few climbs on it. This is less climbed than Razorback, but perhaps a little taller and harder to protect.

Breaking Rock

A cresting wave of rock curls up ready to break over the ground below. The geological features around Mount Isa are quite incredible.
