Remarkable View

Battle Mountain

This is the view from Battle Mountain, also known as Mount Remarkable. It is a spectacular view and there is a stone circle memorial on top, to remember those who died here. This place should be a National Park on the World Heritage list.

Battle Mountain Stars

Battle Mountain Star Trail

Brightly lit Jupiter sets behind the summit of Battle Mountain at the end of a warm clear day. This is a significant place for the Kalkadoon people of Western Queensland. It was the site of a lengthy battle between the Queensland police and Kalkadoon people in 1884.

Battle Mountain

Battle Mountain (aka Mount Remarkable)

I went searching for Battle Mountain and found it.  This is the site of the battle in 1884 that destroyed the Kalkadoon resistance near Mount Isa.  In an often repeated story in history, rocks and spears are no match for bullets.

New Sign

IMG_4382

A brand new sign on the entry to Mount Isa. The concrete was only just curing as I came back from a trip and saw the new sign. A reminder of some of the heritage of the area around here that is often overlooked.

Axe

IMGP2092

An axe made by the Kalkadoon people of the Mount Isa region. This was also found in the Outback@Isa museum. It is made from a sturdy stick, a hard green stone and joined using the resin from tree saps. These were highly prized tools, often traded as far south as present day Adelaide.
