Scot Stone

Stones on a beach. The Cure and Rolling Stones came to mind.

A beach of stones in Scotland. The entire beach is made of well rounded stones. This perfectly circular hollow caught my eye walking past. The formation process is truly remarkable. This was the beach leading to St Ninian's cave.

Eclipsed Solar Disc

Third Contact Svalbard 2015

The third contact of the Total Solar Eclipse of March 20, 2015. This was recorded from Isfjord radio station on Spitzbergen Island, Svalbard. This is a still taken from the video on yesterday's post. The digital recording does not do the experience of seeing the eclipse justice. It is far more stunning to be present to witness the eclipse and especially so at this remarkable location.

Svalbard Total Solar Eclipse

This video shows a replay of the total solar eclipse on Svalbard, Friday March 20, 2015. The video was recorded with a 200mm lens and Canon 60D DSLR on a fixed tripod. It was taken from the Isfjord radio station south west of Longyearbyen, almost on the centre line of the eclipse. I was one of a lucky few who took a Basecamp Explorer expedition trip to Isfjord to see the eclipse.

Galloway Stars Scotland

Galloway Astronomy Centre Star Trails Scotland

A quick photo from the wonderful Galloway Astronomy Centre in south-west Scotland. You will notice the gaps in the star trails caused by some fast moving thick clouds. If you ever get the chance to go, do it. The amazing Mike and Helen as your hosts make the stay unforgettable. Their local knowledge and interests in history, archaeology and astronomy bring out the inquisitive nerd in anybody and make you extremely welcome. This photo sequence was cut short by a rain shower. The colour in the sky is remarkable due to the near full moon, leading up to Easter, and the rapid movement of the clouds in the stacking process.

Isfjordradio Stars With Guest

Isfjordradio Stars Aurora

The evening of the Total Solar Eclipse saw this scene over the Isfjordradio station just before midnight. I set the camera up for some star trails and went back inside for some warmth while the camera did all the hard work. When we came back out (with a wonderful guide on polar bear watch) we saw this hint of Miss Aurora flashing to life. We stood in awe and amazement for some moments as we silently watched the amazing display grace the skies with her beauty. A truly spectacular and unforgettable moment.

Contrast

Old and New. The Burj Khalifa from the old Dubai Heritage port.

The contrasts of Dubai. On the original site of Dubai by the creek is a Heritage Site preserving the history of Dubai. This comprises the foreground. In the background is the new way in Dubai, big and extravagant.

Welsh Visit

A little town in Wales called Llanberis near Mount Snowden. The premier climbing district of the UK.

A visit to Llanberis in Wales will lead you to this street in a quaint old town. Don't let it fool you into thinking it is a sleepy little town though. This is the hub of rock climbing in the UK.
