Morning Refraction

Morning Refraction

The land masses of the NSW North Coast as seen across the Pacific Ocean from Byron Bay. What is remarkable about this image is that some of the land masses appear to be floating above the ocean surface. This is an optical illusion caused by the refraction of light due to total internal reflection off the ocean's warm surface air layer. Physics is everywhere.

Quietly Rusting

Old Landsborough Highway

Two car wrecks on the Old Landsborough Highway, quietly and slowly rusting. The extreme dry weather here preserves steel very well.

Star Stuff

Byron Sunrise

Australia's first mainland sunrise seen from the main beach at Byron Bay. This was while I was visiting Byron to hear some fantastic talks at the StarStuff II Festival of Space, Science and Astronomy.

Cloud Catcher

Byron Warning

This is what looks like a mountain range casting some clouds out to sea. It is the Northern Rivers section of New South Wales as seen From Byron Bay. One can just make out the outline of Mount Warning on the clouded horizon.
