Gunpowder State School

Gina Goes To School

The old town of Gunpowder north of Mount Isa has a school. There's old classrooms in there that are no longer used. They have been converted into living quarters for miners who used to work there.

I taught in this school in 1976 & 1977. The older buildings were built by the Gunpowder Copper the company which operated the mine and built the township the weit as well as the power station. The newest building was built by Education Qld. The old classrooms were great with tinted windows and insect screens and a podium for the teacher to stand on the length of the blackboard. I loved living and working there. I was very sorry to leave when operations closed down.

Awesome. It would have been a great place to live. One of my friends used to live there and showed us around the place.
