Remarkable View

Battle Mountain

This is the view from Battle Mountain, also known as Mount Remarkable. It is a spectacular view and there is a stone circle memorial on top, to remember those who died here. This place should be a National Park on the World Heritage list.

I have been reserching battle mountain for years now . I grew up in mount is a and had heard the stories and have read the origonial native mounted police reports of various massacres in the area and scoured the news papers of the 1860s through to the 1940s looking for reports and recollections of massacres recorded by the pioneers. The gulf country was a very violent place in the 1880s and the aborigonial Resistance was fierce and sustained , however the battle of battle mountain is a legend , it didn't happen. The story that is to be found on the internet today is complete fabrication. With a little bit of research you can watch the story grow from sub inspector Urquharts march 8th 1885 report to Hudson fyshs yarn in taming the north to the fabricated story in Armstrong's " the kalkadoons" through to what is being portrayed today on the internet. I can only hope that my superannuation grows as well as this story has. Still , it's a rollicking good yarn .

Historical distortions aside, there was certainly a conflict here as Urquhart documented.
